Product variations: a catalogue checklist

A clear variation structure makes products easier to buy and maintain.

Separate products from options

A different colour is often an option of the same product; an entirely different use or specification may deserve its own page. Decide the structure before importing the catalogue. Record a consistent identifier for each sellable variation so orders and stock updates refer to the right item.

Prepare the information together

For every variation, gather the available images, option name, price and availability information you can verify. Do not use a photograph of one model as evidence of another model’s features. If some combinations are unavailable, prevent customers from selecting them rather than explaining the problem after an order.

Design for a small screen

Long lists of nearly identical options are difficult to scan on a phone. Use meaningful labels and show the selected option beside the quantity control. Size guidance should be easy to reach without losing the chosen product. Ask someone unfamiliar with the range to find a specific combination.

Plan ongoing updates

Agree whether the website or an external system is the source of truth. Test an update to one variation before importing a full spreadsheet. Keep the original export as a backup and document required columns. A good catalogue is an ongoing operational asset, not only a launch task.
